Position size calculator

Lots or contracts from your risk and stop, for forex, gold, indices and futures. Then see whether that stop still fits inside your prop firm's daily loss limit and max loss.

1Your account

Fills in the balance and the firm's limits for a fresh account

2Your trade

EURUSD · $10 per pip per lot

Trade 2.50 lots to risk $500 at your stop.

FX conversions use the ECB reference rates of 2026-10-12. Sizes are rounded down, so the risk never goes over what you set. A stop doesn't guarantee your fill: in fast markets the loss can be larger.

How position size is calculated

Position size = the money you are willing to lose ÷ (stop distance × value per pip, point or tick for one lot or contract). The value per pip comes from the contract: $10 per lot for USD-quoted forex pairs, $100 per $1.00 move for a lot of gold, and the exchange's tick value for futures. Pairs quoted in other currencies are converted with the day's ECB reference rates.

On a prop account the stop also has to fit the firm's limits. If $600 is left of today's daily loss limit, a stop that would lose $700 ends your day even if it is 1% of the balance. The calculator shows how much of each limit your stop uses and the largest size that stays inside it. To see where your account stands now, run the account check.

Questions

How do I calculate position size?

Decide how much money you are willing to lose on the trade, then divide it by what the stop distance costs for one lot or contract. Position size = risk in dollars ÷ (stop distance × value per pip, point or tick). With $500 at risk and a 25 pip stop on EURUSD ($10 a pip per lot), that is 500 ÷ (25 × 10) = 2 lots.

How much should I risk per trade on a prop firm account?

Many prop traders risk 0.5% to 1% of the account per trade. More important is the daily loss limit and the max loss: a single stop should use only a part of what is left of them, so one losing trade cannot end the day or the account.

What is a pip worth?

For pairs quoted in US dollars (EURUSD, GBPUSD, AUDUSD) one pip is $10 per standard lot, $1 per mini lot and $0.10 per micro lot. For other pairs it depends on the exchange rate of the quote currency: USDJPY at 150 is about $6.67 a pip per lot.

What is a futures tick worth?

ES moves in 0.25 ticks worth $12.50 per contract, NQ $5, YM $5, RTY $5, CL $10 and GC $10. The micro contracts (MES, MNQ, MYM, M2K, MCL, MGC) are worth a tenth of these.

Why does the calculator round down?

So the money at risk never goes over what you set. A position of 4.2857 lots becomes 4.28 lots, and 2.67 contracts becomes 2, because brokers and prop platforms only accept whole contracts or 0.01 lot steps.
