The prop firm consistency rule, explained

A consistency rule caps the share of your profit that may come from your single best day. It decides whether a pass or payout counts, and it is the rule traders most often trip over without noticing.

How it works

The firm takes your best day and divides it by a base. Most firms use your total net profit; some use the sum of your winning days only, or the account's profit target. If the result is above the limit, the rule is broken.

Example: a 40% rule, five days of +$600, +$1,800, −$300, +$400, +$600. Total profit is $3,100 and the best day is $1,800, which is 58% of the total. To bring $1,800 down to 40% you need $4,500 in total, so $1,400 more on other days.

Break it, and usually you just wait

At most firms a violation doesn't fail the account. It raises the bar: more profit or more days before you pass or before a payout is approved. A few programs treat it as a hard rule. Check which kind yours is before you size up on a good day.

* FTMO: Rule change: FTMO 1-Step accounts ordered from 12 October 2026, 09:00 CEST use a Consistency rule (best day at most 50% of total profit), which this site now checks. Accounts ordered before that keep the old Best Day Rule: the best day may be at most 50% of the profit of your positive days only.

From each firm's official pages, verified Oct 2026. Some sizes of a program can differ; the firm pages show every size. Accounts with no rule at all are listed on prop firms without a consistency rule.

Consistency rule questions

What is the consistency rule in a prop firm?

A limit on how much of your profit may come from a single day. With a 40% rule and $5,000 of profit, no day may contribute more than $2,000. Firms use it so a pass or payout reflects repeatable trading rather than one lucky day.

Does breaking the consistency rule fail the account?

Usually not. At most firms a larger best day just means you need more total profit (or more days) before you pass or get paid. A few firms treat it as a hard rule that fails the account; the table on this page shows which.

How do I calculate my consistency percentage?

Divide your best day by the base the firm uses (usually total net profit, sometimes the sum of winning days or the profit target) and compare it with the limit. The calculator on this page does it for any firm and also shows the most you can make tomorrow without breaking the rule.

How do I fix a consistency violation?

Keep trading smaller, steady days. Each profitable day raises the total, so your best day becomes a smaller share. You need total profit of at least best day ÷ limit; at 40% and a $1,800 best day that is $4,500.
